So if people ever look down upon you for crying for fictional characters, you should give them a gentle, pitying look and feel bad for them. Books are good company, in sad times and happy times, for books are people - people who have managed to stay alive by hiding between the covers of a book. … Reading is the work of the alert mind, is demanding, and under ideal conditions produces finally a sort of ecstasy. … Reading possesses a sublimity and power unequalled by any other form of communication.” ~ E.B. I was raised among books, making invisible friends in pages that seemed cast from dust and whose smell I carry on my hands to this day. ~ Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Old books exert a strange fascination in me. Their smell, their feel, their history, wondering who might have owned them, how they lived.

My absolute favorite thing is finding a book I can't put down and reading it until really late at night and only stopping when my eyes start to hurt and my vision gets blurry from either sleep or strain. And when I put it down I realize how tired I am and fall asleep instantly. In the morning, I wake up and the first thing I do is pick up the book and I read until I'm hungry or I need to pee. I just love that.

Sometimes I forget myself in a book. And when I have to stop reading, it takes me a minute to remember where I am. Or who I am.

Just in case things get boring, I'm bringing a book.

If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.

The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you and now, here it is, set down by someone else. A person you have never met. Someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours. ~ Alan Bennett

Keep calm, drink tea, and read books.

When I say, "I wish they would turn this book into a movie," what I really mean is, "I wish they would turn this book into a 17-hour-long spectacle that includes every single solitary detail and doesn't deviate at all from the storyline and has perfect casting."

For me, "I'll just read one or two more chapters," always ends at four in the morning with a finished book.

"Don't you ever do anything besides read?" "Not willingly."

Reading won't solve your problems. But then again, neither will housework.

When I finish a book, I mope around for a few hours because I feel a hole in my heart. When I finish a series, it's even worse.

Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve. Find a girl who reads. You'll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She's the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That's the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow. She's the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she's kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author's making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book. Buy her another cup of coffee. Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce's Ulysses, she's just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or if she would like to be Alice.

I want a boy who will build me bookshelves.

I want a boy who takes me on dates to the bookstore and buys me books instead of roses.

"One more chapter…" I whispered, two hours ago.

Never judge a book by its movie.

Books wash away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

I decided staying up all night and finishing my book was more important than being mentally present today.

I hate buying books with the covers of movie adaptations.

I was born with a reading list I will never finish.

When I've had too much reality, I open a book.

No two persons ever read the same book.

If a book is well written, I always find it too short.

What an astonishing thing a book is. It's a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you're inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic. ~ Carl Sagan

It's strange because sometimes I read a book and I think I am the people in the book.

Reading! Fuck you, reality!

I don't buy books. I adopt them.

You know that moment when you're reading a book and you just have to stop and bite your lip and squeal or sigh or close your eyes and wrinkle your nose and forehead and press the book against your heart and just like stay there and try to soak up the gorgeous literature via osmosis? That's my favorite part of reading.

Reading is your friend when other people forget to be. It is as clear as it can possibly be. It teaches you things. It gives you lots of other friends, occasionally cute ones. It gives you places to dream about. It invents things that no one has ever dreamed of. It will stay with you until the very end. After Lord Voldemort is dead, Narnia is gone, and Alice is awake.

If I'm ever stranded, I hope it's in a bookstore.

Should I cook, clean or do the grocery shopping? Okay, reading it is!

I tried everything to get to sleep last night. Well, everything except closing the book and putting it on the nightstand. Let's not get too crazy.

On rare occasions there comes along a profound original, an odd little book that appears out of nowhere, from the pen of some obscure storyteller, and once you have read it, you will never go completely back to where you were before. The kind of book you may hesitate to lend for fear you might miss its company. the kind of book that echoes from the heart of some ancient knowing, and whispers from time's forgotten cave that life may be more than it seems, and less.

Crisp days and autumn leaves make me want to read more books.

If I could be paid to read books, I think I would die happy.

We read to know that we are not alone.

Nothing renders me useless like a really good book.

I'd love it if I could make a living off reading books of my choice.

A digital book can't be infused with smells, can't press flowers in between its pages. It can't contain spilt tears or coffee stains. No, only a real book can do those things.

A book you finish reading is not the same book it was before you read it.

"Mr. Van Doren is that rarity, a truly well read man who reads not for professional purposes but for pleasure. His book spurs us on to explore more deeply and joyfully the infinitely varied terrain of good books." ~ Clifton Fadiman, author of "The New Lifetime Reading Plan: The Classical Guide to World Literature", commenting on Charles van Doren's "The Joy of Reading"

For I need not remind such an audience as this that the neat sorting out of books into age-groups, so dear to publishers, has only a very sketchy relation with the habits of any real readers. Those of us who are blamed when old for reading childish books were blamed when children for reading books too old for us. No reader worth his salt trots along in obedience to a time-table. ~ C.S. Lewis

It's a great blessing if one can lose all sense of time, all worries, if only for a short time, in a book. ~ Nella Last

Oh! I am delighted with the book! I should like to spend my whole life in reading it. ~ Jane Austen

A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say. ~Italo Calvino

Think before you speak. Read before you think. ~ Fran Lebowitz

A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading. ~ William Styron

I guess there are never enough books. ~ John Steinbeck

If books are not good company, where will I find it? ~ Mark Twain

Outside of a dog, books are man's best friend. Inside a dog it's too dark to read. ~ Groucho Marx

“Reading is a miracle of communication in the midst of solitude. … Reading is at the threshold of our inner life; it can lead us into that life but cannot constitute it. … What is needed, therefore, is an intervention that occurs deep within ourselves while coming from someone else, the impulse of another mind that we receive in the bosom of solitude.” ~ Marcel Proust

“Books … give us the model of self-transcendence. Some people think of reading only as a kind of escape: an escape from the “real” everyday world to an imaginary world, the world of books. Books are much more. They are a way of being fully human.” ~ Susan Sontag

“Among the many worlds that man did not receive as a gift from nature but created out of his own mind, the world of books is the greatest. ... Without the word, without the writing of books, there is no history, there is no concept of humanity. And if anyone wants to try to enclose in a small space, in a single house or a single room, the history of the human spirit and to make it his own, he can only do this in the form of a collection of books. … If today the ability to read is everyone’s portion, still only a few notice what a powerful talisman has thus been put into their hands. There are a few who remain constantly bewitched by the strange miracle of letters and words (which once, to be sure, were an enchantment and magic formula to everyone). From these few come the readers. They discover as children the few poems and stories … and instead of turning their backs on these things after acquiring the ability to read, they press forward into the realm of books and discover step by step how vast, how various and blessed this world is!” ~ Hermann Hesse

“Books are meat and medicine and flame and flight and flower, steel, stitch, and cloud and clout, and drumbeats in the air.” ~ Gwendolyn Brooks

“In many ways, books are the original internet — each fact, each story, each new bit of information can be a hyperlink to another book, another idea, another gateway into the endlessly whimsical rabbit hole of the written word. Just like the web pages you visit most regularly, your physical bookmarks take you back to those book pages you want to return to again and again, to reabsorb and relive, finding new meaning on each visit — because the landscape of your life is different, new, “reloaded” by the very act of living.” ~ Maria Popova

“To three possessions thou shouldst look – acquire a field, a friend, a book.” ~ Hai Goan

“Some books seem like a key to unfamiliar rooms in one’s own castle. … I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound and stab us. If the book we’re reading doesn’t wake us up with a blow on the head, what are we reading it for? So that it will make us happy, as you write? Good Lord, we would be happy precisely if we had no books, and the kind of books that make us happy are the kind we could write ourselves if we had to. But we need the books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us.” ~ Franz Kafka

“With what admiration the reading of excellent poets fills anyone who attentively studies the invention and interpretation of concepts! And what shall I say of architecture? What of the art of navigation? But surpassing all stupendous inventions, what sublimity of mind was his who dreamed of finding means to communicate his deepest thoughts to any other person, though distant by mighty intervals of place and time! Of talking with those who are in India; of speaking to those who are not yet born and will not be born for a thousand or ten thousand years; and with what facility, by the different arrangements of twenty characters upon a page! Let this be the seal of all the admirable inventions of mankind.” ~ Galileo
