Q: Does it turn the pages?
A: No. Until a sheet of plexiglas can morph into a Transformer robot, books lying atop Overhead in Bed will still need to be raised and their pages turned by the gentle flick of human fingers. The question reveals a genuinely admirable laziness and bestows a confidence in our ingenuity. Maybe someday we'll come up with something.
Comment: My spouse doesn't like the look of it and doesn't want it in the bedroom.
A: Form follows function. S/he can aestheticize the drape into moving art.
Comment: I don't read enough to want one.
A: You'd read a lot more if you had one, and anyway you’ll watch more content on your smartphone than on your television. It may sound trivial, but you don’t have to go to the screen - the screen comes to you.
Comment: I don't want another project.
A: Drilling a few holes into sheetrock?
Q: What if I forget to raise the plexiglas and push it off to the side? What if I hit my head?
A: What if you forget to raise the seat and splash everywhere?
Q: Does the surface scratch much?
A: A little bit. Over time, micro-scratches will appear from pulling paper across the surface [lignin versus polymethyl methacrylate], but they're not visible while reading. We decided against glass per its weight and fragility, and we decided against the hard material used for motorcycle shields because of its prohibitive cost. Fuggedabowd riot shields and bandit glass. Rubbing a small dab of Turtle Wax removes these itsy bitsy scratches and shines up the plexiglas.
Q: My kid doesn't like to read. Will this help?
A: Yes! Hands-free reading eliminates the physical froo-frah that lessens the experience and kills the fun. Lying within the privacy of OHIB eliminates all distraction and gets right into reading's essence, directly connecting mind to material whose import rains down into the relaxed reader's consciousness. It's supine, it's comfy, it's freaky 'n uniquey. Coming from the top down, Overhead in Bed is a heaven-sent remedial aid that re-adjusts reading-reluctance into reading-enthusiasm. [Improving literacy reduces the so-called ‘achievement gap’. Face a fact: if a kid can't read, his life is limited.]
Q: Is it haptic?
A: Not yet. Overhead in Bed will evolve into this capacity, the platform’s touch-responsive surface is covered in the patent. Holograms will be here in the not-too-distant future.
